Two Auburn students, one being an Auburn football player, were arrested Monday on charges of vandalism for smashing 15 windows valued at $550 each.
The Auburn students were identified as Bobby Ray Williams, 20, a sophomore, and George Hatfield, 22, a senior. Williams is majoring in business, and Hatfield is majoring in biology. University relations reported that Williams is a straight-A student who plans to attend a summer honors program at Columbus College this summer, and Hatfield is the starting center for Auburn’s football team.
Auburn University football coach Bryan Harsin said, “Hatfield will not be able to play in Saturday’s game. We are looking into this incident.”
Eddie Vinson, the janitor, said he caught them throwing bricks at the first-floor windows at approximately 6:45 a.m. Monday. Vinson said the two ran from him after they threw bricks at him. He said he knew them both and reported the incident to the police. Vinson said, “They were acting crazy, laughing and hollering. I heard one of them – I think it was George – say ‘to hell with this school.’”
Williams and Hatfield are suspended from the university until the Student Council hearing is scheduled. Lee County District Attorney Jana Halversham said both could face additional charges.
Harvey Oswald, chief of campus security, said, “I just can’t understand how they could do such a thing. They weren’t drunk or on drugs. They are good students who have contributed to the school. They’ve never been in trouble before. It’s a real mystery to me.” Oswald said they did not deny their guilt.
Hatfield refused to comment, but Williams said, “We won’t be fooled again. That’ll teach those swimmers not to be so arrogant.”
The new swimming complex, a $150 million dollar facility, was to be dedicated Friday before the University of Mississippi v. Auburn game this Saturday. 6,000 alumni and university supporters were expected to attend the dedication service that was scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday. The ceremony is postponed until repairs are made.
